Salt River Watershed

Mission Statement: We support water quality monitoring that informs, connects, and empowers volunteers and their communities for the improvement and protection of Kentucky’s water resources.

The Kentucky Watershed Watch (KYWW) organization provides training for anyone to sample their chosen stream location. Volunteer samplers learn how to make general observations, analyze field chemistry parameters (pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, and conductivity), analyze bacteriological (E. coli) concentrations, and assess habitat and biological conditions. Biological conditions are measured through the presence of aquatic macroinvertebrate insects that serve as indicators of water quality.

KYWW is seeking a summer intern to assist with two main components of the volunteer stream sampling program:

-          Comparison of a new E. coli analysis method (R-Card) with a laboratory method (IDEXX Colilert). A focused study of a Louisville area watershed will be designed so that multiple comparison samples are taken, then analyzed using each method. A statistical analysis will be conducted to determine variation between the two methods, and a summary report will be completed and presented to the Salt River Basin leadership.

-          Training volunteer samplers on the sampling protocols for the habitat and biological assessment procedures. This would entail familiarization with these established protocols and conducting in-person training workshops throughout Kentucky where volunteers have an interest.  Assessment results would be entered into the KYWW database for public access.  Additionally, the intern will provide general guidance on ways to improve stream and riparian habitat.

Responsibilities:

-          Review training materials for Habitat and Biological Assessment

-          Create any additional needed training resources

-          Schedule and conduct training workshops

-          Provide training to volunteer samplers

-          Record and enter data from Habitat and Biological Assessments

-          Revise training materials as needed

-          Provide a summary report of internship activities to KYWW Board

Qualifications: College undergraduate student, preferably with biology or science background. Mapping and graphic design skills are also beneficial. Some travel required.
